There is a known AO3 bug where character names that are in the tag set do not show up in the drop-down box in the sign-up form. If you don't see the character you want, go to the tag set, copy and paste the whole tag, including any disambiguations (i.e., Clint Barton (616)), into the form, and add a comma to complete the tag.

Are you copying the whole tag from the tag set, including the disambiguation? For reference, here's the whole thing:

Cool, that worked. Oddly, it doesn't find Clint on the drop down list, and even when I type in the exact tag, it doesn't find him. But, it lets me add him and now it accepts my sign up with his tag.

It's a known AO3 bug; some tags just refuse to show up on the dropdown. I forgot to put up a note about it. You're welcome!
