There is a known AO3 bug where character names that are in the tag set do not show up in the drop-down box in the sign-up form. If you don't see the character you want, go to the tag set, copy and paste the whole tag, including any disambiguations (i.e., Clint Barton (616)), into the form, and add a comma to complete the tag.

The form is letting me do any fandom, not just the ones in the tagset. I was able to add in Tokyo Mew Mew and AO3 accepted the sign up even though Tokyo Mew Mew isn't in the tagset. I was also able to add "Tsukino Usagi | Sailor Moon" to another fandom's request despite that character not being on the tagset anywhere.

Hey, I don't know if it's too late to change it or not: the character of Luca Jameson from Tomorrow People 13 is spelled wrong in the tag.

For whatever reason, it looks like the Luka tag is the canonical, and I don't want to change it now because it has already been requested. But thank you for letting me know!

Your author (or you, if you end up writing a story about this character) will be able to use whatever tag they want on the actual story. This is just for requesting and offering.

That's good to know! I was under the impression that the character tags in the posted story had to be the same as in the tagset, so I'm happy to be corrected on that.

The FAQ says, "If you request multiple characters, the assigned writer must include all of those characters in the fanwork, in some way, unless otherwise noted under your optional details."

So just to be clear, I can request a bunch of characters, and then just state in the optional details that I don't need them all to appear in the same fic? And then they are not obligated to listen since optional details are optional, and they could decide to go ahead and include everybody I mentioned, right?

So if I like say... one particular pair of characters together, or another, the only way for me to be sure I'd get them for that fandom would be to ask only for them?

Example: if in the Arrow fandom I'd either like a story with Oliver and his mother OR Oliver and his best friend, I have to just pick the two I like most. Because if I list all the characters, they could choose to create an ensemble piece instead, right?

Or am I misunderstanding this whole thing?

Your understanding is correct - they could write an ensemble fic if you listed everyone. I would say that's pretty unlikely to actually happen, though - if people get the chance to simplify, they'll generally take it.

The sign ups won't let me put Clint Barton in for Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though he's in the tag set and he was approved when I nominated him. He doesn't show up on the drop down list, and it doesn't let me add him in.

Cool, that worked. Oddly, it doesn't find Clint on the drop down list, and even when I type in the exact tag, it doesn't find him. But, it lets me add him and now it accepts my sign up with his tag.
